Methodology

PERCH

Professional Evidence & Reasoning Critical Heuristic.

PERCH is a structured reasoning framework for evaluating claims, research outputs, AI-generated content, and business recommendations before making decisions.

PERCH scorecard

Perspective★★★★★
Evidence★★★★★
Reasoning★★★★★
Context★★★★★
Hypotheses★★★★★

Purpose

  • Strengthen reasoning before trusting a claim.
  • Expose missing perspectives, weak evidence, and bad logic.
  • Create a disciplined review path for AI output.

When to use

  • Researching competitors or markets.
  • Reviewing AI-generated reports or recommendations.
  • Making decisions that depend on evidence quality.

When not to use

  • Simple factual questions.
  • Basic calculations.
  • Grammar correction or simple drafting.

Decision tree

Use PERCH when the question is not just ‘what does the AI say?’ but ‘should we trust this?’

  • If the evidence is weak, slow down.
  • If the reasoning is thin, test the logic.
  • If context changes the meaning, revise the conclusion.

Process

P

Perspective

  • Whose view is this? Who benefits? Who is missing?

E

Evidence

  • What evidence supports the claim, and how reliable is it?

R

Reasoning / Representativeness

  • Does the logic follow? Is the evidence representative or cherry-picked?

C

Context

  • What market, regulatory, operational, or historical context changes the meaning?

H

Hypotheses

  • What alternative explanations or competing interpretations weaken the conclusion?

AI prompts

Prompt 1

Run a PERCH review on this claim. Identify missing perspectives, evidence gaps, logic problems, context shifts, and competing hypotheses.

Prompt 2

For each claim, state the confidence level and the type of source that would be needed to verify it.

Examples

Example

‘Revenue increased 40% because of AI.’ PERCH asks for audited figures, checks whether market growth explains the change, and tests the causal claim.

Common mistakes

  • Accepting the first convincing answer.
  • Ignoring incentives and perspective.
  • Treating one source as enough.
